White Card

Digital NomadEasy

The Hungarian White Card is a residence permit for digital nomads, allowing remote workers to legally live and work in Hungary while working for employers or clients outside the country.

Overview

The Hungarian White Card (White Card) is a residence permit designed specifically for digital nomads. It allows remote workers—including freelancers, remote employees, and business owners—to legally reside and work in Hungary while providing services to employers or clients outside the country. Cardholders are not required to pay taxes in Hungary but must prove their income is legal and stable. The White Card is typically valid for one year and can be renewed. Applications must be submitted at Hungarian embassies or consulates abroad. After approval, holders must enter Hungary within a specified period and register their residential address. This pathway does not directly lead to permanent residency but can serve as a foundation for long-term stay.

Requirements

  • Must be a non-EU citizen.
  • Must be a remote worker (digital nomad), with work or business fully dependent on the internet, and clients or employers located outside Hungary.
  • Must provide proof of income meeting the official minimum monthly threshold set by Hungary (check latest official figures).
  • Must have valid health insurance covering the entire territory of Hungary.
  • Must have a clean criminal record.
  • Must not engage in local employment or serve local clients in Hungary.

Application steps

  1. Prepare required documents, including passport, income proof, remote work proof, health insurance, etc.
  2. Make an online appointment or submit the application directly at the Hungarian embassy/consulate in your country of residence.
  3. Submit the application and pay the relevant fee (check latest official fee schedule).
  4. Wait for processing; you may be asked to provide additional documents or attend an interview.
  5. Upon approval, receive the White Card (usually as an entry visa or card).
  6. Enter Hungary within the specified period and register your residential address at the local immigration office.
  7. Collect your official residence permit (White Card).

Tips

  • Confirm the income threshold in advance, as it may be adjusted, and ensure your income proof meets the latest requirements.
  • All non-Hungarian documents must be translated into Hungarian and notarized.
  • Purchase health insurance that covers the entire application and stay period before applying.
  • When choosing a Hungarian embassy/consulate, check its jurisdiction and appointment process.
  • Register your address promptly after entry to avoid affecting your residence status.
