OCI Card

The Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) Card is a long-term residence permit for individuals of Indian origin and their spouses. It allows holders to live, work, and study in India indefinitely, and enjoy economic, financial, and educational rights equivalent to Indian citizens (except political rights). Eligible applicants include: former Indian passport holders, those whose parents/grandparents/great-grandparents were Indian citizens, or spouses of Indian citizens (marriage must have lasted at least two years). The OCI Card is not Indian citizenship; holders retain their original nationality but can enter India multiple times without a visa. Note: Citizens of Pakistan or Bangladesh are not eligible.

• Applicant must have held an Indian passport, or have parents/grandparents/great-grandparents who were Indian citizens; or be the spouse of an Indian citizen (marriage must have lasted at least two years).
• Applicant must never have held a passport of Pakistan or Bangladesh, and parents/grandparents/great-grandparents must not be citizens of those countries.
• Applicant must not currently hold an Indian passport.
• If a former Indian citizen, must provide proof of renunciation of Indian citizenship.

1. Log in to the Indian Ministry of Home Affairs OCI service website, fill out the online application form, and upload photo and signature.
2. After submitting, print the signed application form and attach original and copies of required documents.
3. Visit the nearest Indian Visa Center or Indian embassy/consulate to submit the application and pay the fee.
4. Wait for processing; additional documents or an interview may be requested.
5. Once approved, collect the OCI Card (usually in person or by an authorized representative).

• Ensure all documents are clear and legible; non-English documents must be accompanied by official translations.
• Confirm eligibility before applying, especially regarding proof of Indian origin.
• It is recommended to book an appointment at the visa center or embassy to avoid queues.
• Double-check all information in the online application form to avoid delays.
• Keep the application receipt and tracking number to check progress.
