Elective Residency Visa

Permanent ResidenceEasy

The Elective Residency Visa allows non-EU nationals to reside in Italy without working, provided they have sufficient passive income.

Overview

The Italian Elective Residency Visa (Visto per Residenza Elettiva) is designed for non-EU citizens who wish to live in Italy long-term without engaging in any work activity. Applicants must demonstrate a stable and sufficient source of passive income (e.g., pensions, rental income, dividends) to support themselves without working in Italy. Upon visa approval, holders must apply for a residence permit within 8 days of arrival. The initial permit is valid for 1 year and is renewable. After 5 years of continuous legal residence, holders may apply for permanent residency. This visa does not grant the right to work in Italy, and applicants must own or rent suitable accommodation in Italy.

Requirements

  • Must be a non-EU citizen
  • Have a stable and sufficient source of passive income meeting Italian official requirements
  • Possess legal accommodation in Italy (owned or long-term rented)
  • No criminal record
  • Be in good health and have health insurance covering Italy
  • Demonstrate a strong connection to Italy (e.g., cultural, family, or economic ties)
  • Note: The visa does not permit any employed or self-employed work in Italy

Application steps

  1. Prepare application documents, including proof of income, accommodation, and criminal record.
  2. Submit the visa application to the Italian embassy or consulate in your country of residence.
  3. Wait for processing; you may be asked to provide additional documents or attend an interview.
  4. If approved, enter Italy with the visa.
  5. Within 8 days of arrival, apply for a residence permit at the local police station (Questura).
  6. Collect the residence permit card at the scheduled appointment.
  7. Renew the residence permit before it expires to maintain legal status.
  8. After 5 years of continuous legal residence, apply for permanent residency.

Tips

  • Consult the Italian embassy or consulate in advance to confirm the latest document requirements.
  • The passive income amount must cover the living costs of all family members.
  • Ensure the accommodation proof is genuine; a rental contract should be at least 1 year.
  • All non-Italian documents must be translated and notarized.
  • Consider hiring an immigration lawyer to assist with the application.
  • Apply for the residence permit as soon as possible after arrival to avoid delays.
